Chemical Engineering is usually associated with large scale petrochemical operations and distillation towers,or metallurgical operations and refining.
These traditional industries are represented in New Zealand by:
- Natural gas extraction in Taranaki, including one of the largest methanol production plants in
the world.
- Oil refining at Whangarei
- Electricity from Geothermal Steam
- Steel production using unique rotary kiln at South Auckland
- Aluminium smelting in Otago
- Gold mining in Coromandel and Otago
- Cement manufacture
However, New Zealand is world famous for agriculture, and our Chemical Engineers are
mostly involved in converting primary agricultural based or forest based resources into
consumer products:
- Dairy Industry
- Animal Byproducts
- Food Processing Industries
- Wood Pulp and Paper Industry
- Refined plant products
Graduate qualifications in Chemical Engineering are offered at the University of Auckland, Canterbury University
and Massey University. Comparable courses are also available at the Universities of Waikato and Otago
